Advice & Inspiration     Tips For Buying The Perfect Rug

Before choosing a rug it is recommended that you first decide its purpose.

Is the rugs purpose to unify the room? If so, then a large rug is recommended. Is the rugs purpose to define a space? In this case a small or medium rug is recommended. Interior designers would recommend starting with a floor plan, so here are some of our top tips.

Creating your floor plan and measuring tips:
  1. Measure the size of the room for which the rug is intended, this will allow you to eliminate several sizes immediately and give you a much better idea of what sizes are suitable.
  2. Measure the area of the room that you wish your new rug to cover, such as the space between the sofas, beside the replace or beside the bed.
  3. Once you know the size you need to select the closest size that is suitable. Most rugs start from a small size measuring 80cm x 150cm.
  4. Using sticky tape as a marker, measure out the different sizes in the room intended to give you the best possible indication of how the rug will fit into your room.
  5. If your furniture already has a lot of colour or pattern then a neutral rug can help bring everything together. Similarly if your furniture is neutral then you can brighten up your room and add a centre piece to your room with a patterned rug. Ideally you would aim to match your patterned rugs secondary colour with a key piece of furniture in the room.

Tips by Room:
  • Bedrooms The three most popular rug options are: to have two small rugs either side of the bed, a runner at the foot of the bed or a large rug that covers around one third of the bed and extends outwards on each side and at the foot of the bed. Modern rugs or shaggy rugs are ideal for creating a warm relaxing atmosphere in your bedroom.
  • Hallways You should open your front door and then measure from this point, i.e. the first three feet should be clear as you enter your hallway. Runners should be at least six inches on either side from the wall to help accentuate your rug and avoid the appearance of carpet.
  • Dining Room The ideal rug should cover the size of the table along with the chairs, allowing some extra room for when seating. Geometric rugs will define the space around the table and instantly create a stunning centerpiece.
  • Kitchens Ideally for kitchens you would want something with a rubber backing or anti slip gel backing. We have a big range of non slip rugs at very affordable sizes and these rugs are usually better equipped to handle the everyday necessities of a modern kitchen. Again large rugs are perfect for under kitchen tables or just as a centrepiece for your kitchen.
  • Living Rooms Be consistent and ensure that each chair or sofa has the same amount of rug space, either have all your furniture legs on the rug, the front two furniture legs on the rug or none at all.
  • At Martin Phillips we have a massive range of rugs. Use the filters and choose based on colour, design (traditional or modern), with fringe or not or quirky and animal print designs.
  • Large Rooms Either a large rug to unify the room or a number of smaller rugs to break up the space. If your large room is a giant conversation area then one rug should be chosen with a consistent distance on or away from the rug. If your large room is broken down into two areas, perhaps a sitting area and dining area, then ideally two rugs should be chosen. They do not have to be the exact same type of rug but the colours should not clash.
